Relaunch Trailer for Smiths Toys
FURBY
Objective
Hasbro aimed to reintroduce Furby to both nostalgic Millennials and a new generation of children, combining classic features with modern design. The goal was to create a short cinematic trailer that built curiosity and excitement, highlighting legendary Furby traits while teasing the full reveal.
Studio Chef’s Role
Studio Chef’s contribution focused purely on lighting, cinematography, and camera operation, working alongside a shoot produced, directed, and edited by Fennixx to ensure the visual storytelling captured the texture, detail, and playful personality of the toy through macro close-ups of signature Furby features, studio shots with on-brand colour patterns and Furby-inspired background elements, and a final reveal shot of the full Furby toy with a playful logo ending.
RESULTS
The Furby relaunch was a commercial and cultural success:
Amazon pre-sales sold out within 48 hours, demonstrating strong demand
Positive impact on Hasbro’s financial performance, with the full-year 2023 report highlighting Furby as a strong performer despite wider challenges in the Consumer Products segment
Appealed to multiple generations, blending 90s nostalgia with Gen Alpha engagement through a simple, screen-free design
Relaunch hype drove secondary market interest, with vintage Furbys seeing increased sales and demand on platforms like eBay
Studio Chef’s cinematography ensured the trailer visually bridged Furby’s storied past with its modern iteration, contributing to a highly successful relaunch.
